You Know It's Almost Memorial Day When.....

It's almost Memorial Day Weekend and the start of summer.  It's a wonderful time of year, a weekend we all look forward to. So, how do you know it's here......

1) The Devon Horse Show
The mecca (other than Upperville) for Horse Show Aficianados.  If you are near the Main Line by all means make the trip.  It's a fun trip for even those who aren't into the horse show scene.

2) The Real Stanley Cup Playoffs Start
The final playoff game is tonight.  Hoping Sidney Crosby can work his magic one more time at home in Pittsburgh.

3) White Jeans?
I wear white jeans about eight months of the year, but some people still wear white only after Memorial Day.

4) Outdoor Entertaining
I actually started dining on the patio a few weeks ago, but once Memorial Day rolls around, it's patio dining seven days a week and I love it. These monogrammed pineapple plates would be lovely on the patio for sure.  See them here.

5) You Don't Think Wearing Lilly is Silly Anymore
Who doesn't love wearing Lilly?  I've been wearing my Lilly popovers for about a month or two now, but you can pull out the shift dresses officially. Isn't this one cute?

6) Jack Rogers Come Out of the Closet

Hope you have fantastic plans for the long weekend!

Net-a-Porter Sale Picks

I'm not a frequent Net-a-Porter shopper, but for a special occasion or when they have sales, it's a good place to visit. The service is good, shipping is free and you can find clothes here you don't see other places. Here are some of my sale picks.....

Happy Wednesday!

Pippa Middleton's Gift Registry?

The fairy tale wedding of Pippa Middleton and James Matthews appeared picture perfect in the photos that upstaged the Preakness among other things this past weekend.  She looked ravishing and I am sincerely hoping that she'll influence brides to be for years to come in making a "traditional" wedding all the rage once again.  She looked astonishing in her bespoke Giles Deacon gown.

What would you buy this young couple for a wedding gift?  Is Pippa as traditional as she appears to be? For the couple who probably "has everything" what in the world would you bring to the wedding?  Here are some of my picks.  I believe she's a traditional bride who likely selected china, silver, linens, and household items that will fit in nicely with her lovely home in London.

This Alpaca Throw would fit in nicely nestled around her animals while lounging on a couch.

I don't think anyone minds getting a piece of Herend.  A bunny is always a good choice because who doesn't love rabbits?
Is Pippa into Chinoiserie?  Even if she's not, who would not love a piece of this hand-painted glassware?

For those photos of that lovely dress, she could certainly use one of these.

I would love to receive this.  James looks like a Bourbon and Water kind of guy.

You can never go wrong with crystal and I love the crystal bowls that I received as wedding presents years ago, the kind of thing you'd never buy for yourself but you love using.

This English Staghorn Flatware makes a fabulous gift.

This picnic basket for two is a great gift for a young couple (and I have this in mind for someone).

And then there's china.  I wonder what patterns she would have picked out?  I have no idea but here are a few that I am loving.....and you can never have too much china, that's for sure!

Happy Tuesday!

The Keswick Lead Line Class

Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words.  This is from the Lead Line Class at the Keswick Horse Show on Saturday night.  Everyone walked home with a blue ribbon but my hunch is this one would have been the real winner. This is a medium or large pony. The rider was fully decked out in side saddle attire as was the lady who lead her around. Priceless.

Meet Madison

Sometimes the stars align and you know there is someone up there really looking after you.  After a search of many months, I welcomed this kind bay mare into my life and I'm happy to admit, she's mine (but I am still pinching myself as I can't believe it).  My trainer saw her at a horse show she was judging (she was not for sale) but a month later she arrived and now Miss Madison is part of my life.  This is a photo of her being born six years ago that her former owner sent me. She was cute from the first moments of her life.  We vetted several horses over a period of a few months and am so glad we waited for Madison as she is so clearly the "right one."

She is kind, smart, easy, agreeable, very pretty, and she has a very bright future in front of her.  How lucky am I?  Diva?  Yes, for sure.  I can't wait to show her all summer long. Stay tuned!

Ye Olde Keswick Horse Show

It's Keswick Horse Show time! Mid-May means Keswick, as in one of the few "old time" horse shows left in Virginia.  It's held just outside of Charlottesville, Virginia in the middle of the Keswick Hunt Country very close to Keswick Hall.   I'd add Upperville and Warrenton to the list of the few "old time" shows are left in our lovely state.  Keswick is shabby chic at its best.  It's upper crust, but it's rustic.  It's competitive beyond belief and your horse must be "train proof" as the train tracks run right through the horse show grounds.  I'm not kidding.  Thankfully Sega and Alfie never minded the train.  The stabling has seen better days and when it rains, it floods.  But no one ever seems to mind.  That's part of the charm of Keswick.

(The Upper Ring)
There are two rings, upper and lower, complete with a grandstand and tailgating ringside.  There's a hunter classic on Friday night and a jumper class on Saturday night under the lights.  Parties every evening of course.  More to come!  Stay tuned.

Spring Coats

The coat fetish continues and spring is a great time to add a little polish to an otherwise dull outfit with a light coat.  Make white jeans work with this really cute black and white gingham coat from Talbots.

For a dressier evening out, this white coat adds a little polish to a plain dress.

If you are daring enough, this coat from Kate Spade could make (or break) an outfit:

Have a great Tuesday!

The Long Lost Art of the Summer Cocktail Soiree

I am seriously considering making it a personal mission to bring back the Cocktail Party.  How do I pull this off?  My original idea was to host a Belmont Stakes Bash if Always Dreaming wins the Preakness (I don't think he's going win though) and the weekend of the Belmont is a big horse show weekend for me.  So that may not work.  But how do I make sure that people will actually come and dress appropriately?  Is that art of the Cocktail Party so foreign now to most people that they don't even know what it means?  Do you have to plan one around an event like the Derby or the Belmont to get people to actually don a dress and a coat and tie?  Has our society slumped that low?

Do we need to educate on what is really appropriate?  Has it gotten that bad?

When was the last time you received a snail mail invitation to attend to a party?  Can you even remember (weddings don't count).

What would you wear to a party in June?

Can this even remotely be pulled off in today's world?
