One Less Pony Girl

Like the rest of the world, I've been reading and mourning and trying to understand what is happening in America when 20 innocent children are gunned down in their school one Friday before Christmas.  This evening I opened the newspaper to read a short synopsis of the shattered lives that are no more.  While all the losses are tragic in themselves, one  in particular hit home, the story of six-year-old Jessica Rekos.

.....she loved all things equestrian. She watched horse movies, read horse books, drew pictures of horses, wrote stories about horses.  She asked Santa for new cowgirl boots and a cowgirl hat.  And her parents had promised her a real live horse when she turned 10.  (WSJ)

That description could have been me or most of my horse crazy girlfriends growing up.  Just think of what this lovely young child is going to miss - the pony she would have loved as much as her parents; the sight of her pigtails flying out from underneath her hard hat as she canters around the ring in her first horse show; the long summer days at the barn with her pony when there's no place in the world she'd rather be.....the tragedy of it all is just too immense and just too senseless. We need to change our world.

  1. This is such a heartfelt and sweet post…hope you don't mind if I share it on Facebook…it hits home with me as my precious granddaughter shares the same love for horses and is the same age as Jessica.

  2. Endless tears, Ann. Such a heavy heart. We gave our oldest daughter her first pony last December on her birthday. Your words are so true and beautifully written. I am heartbroken...this is such a tragedy beyond belief. But I know in my heart that God is comforting this precious little soul. Hopefully with ponies and endless comfort and love.

    1. Tell your beautiful girls to hug their ponies a little harder today. It is all so senseless. Thank you for your kind words.

  4. May this sweet little soul meet up with another sweet soul in Heaven - Ruffian. And may they have many good times together running in God's wind.

I am heartbroken for the ones left behind.

  6. I read about this little one, and her adoration of all things equine. I hope her parents know there's a giant community of fellow horse-lovers out here who feel a special bond with them over her loss. We were all once a pony girl...

  7. Just another reminder of how short and precious life is. My daughter lost her best friend Hennessy last year - maybe he is carrying another sweet angel around heaven today.
