Eco-Friendly Laundry Detergents

One very easy way to "go green" is to start using eco-friendly detergents.  While it may cost a little more, in the long-run, it's a no-brainer.  And there are so many on the market now it can be hard to choose.  I have not tried all of these, but others have, so here are some options.

One lab spent three weeks evaluating 14 of the most popular soaps—from plant-based soap nuts to "hybrid" liquid detergents—on how well they remove stains, how affordable they are, how transparent they are about the ingredients they contain, and how many plant-based ingredients they include. (See the entire report here).

Did you know that there is no such thing as a perfectly "green" detergent. For instance, the harvesting and processing of some plant-based ingredients have a more significant overall carbon footprint than traditional, petroleum-derived alternatives. And some detergents may be all-natural, but don't get clothes very clean.

These are the best eco-friendly laundry detergents this lab tested ranked, in order:
  1. Seventh Generation Free & Clear Laundry Detergent
  2. Tide PurClean
  3. Method 8X Free & Clear Laundry Detergent
  4. The Laundress Sport Detergent
  5. Method 4x Concentrated Laundry Detergent
  6. Defunkify Active Wash Laundry Detergent Powder
  7. Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day Laundry Detergent
  8. Biokleen Laundry Liquid
  9. GreenShield Organic
  10. Charlie's Soap
  11. Boulder Clean
  12. Ecos Free & Clear
  13. Eco Nuts
 Go green in 2020!
