Sir Alfred Munnings, Equestrian Artist

The great equestrian painter Sir Alfred Munnings seems to be getting a lot of press these days, even though he has been dead over a half century.

If you are a Downton Abbey fan, or more specifically, if you are a Dan Stevens fan (the late Matthew Crawley) then you might want to check out this upcoming film in which he has a leading role, about the late Sir Alfred Munnings (1878-1959).  The film is entitled Summer in February and comes out in the UK this summer. I am not certain if a US release date has been set.  You can read a great article about the movie and the artist here.  It is sure to create a lot of buzz:

The movie is based on a true story (and Jonathan Smith's novel)  love triangle set among a bohemian colony of artists in Cornwall just before the First World War. Sounds yummy.

Munnings was one of the great equestrian artists of the 20th century.  You will likely recognize his work.

The National Sporting Life Library in Middleburg, Virginia will also be hosting an exhibition, Munnings: Out in the Open, which will include over fifty masterworks by Munnings from April 24th through September 15th.  I can't wait to see it.

Hope to see the movie and the exhibit.  Lots of things to look forward to this summer!  Enjoy your Wednesday.

  1. I ADORE Munning's work and boy, would I love to see that exhibit! Don't think I'll make it to the museum before it's over, unfortunately. And no, I did not know my boy Dan was going to be in a movie about him, either! I really hope I'm able to see that, at least. Thanks for telling us the good news!
