Bedroom Refresh

I've been on the farm now for 10 years full-time so some parts of the house are starting to get a bit tired and even outdated.  It all started with my bedroom rug which is actually worn out.  The rug was made for the room and I bought it at a great remnant outlet in North Carolina. Since we are not going there these days, I called the decorator and she's working on a new one. But it made me realize that room is a bit tired and needs some uplifting.

The room is blue (oddly since I am truly a green person). Walls are painted a light blue with white trim. The ceilings upstairs are eight feet not nine so it limits what you can do. If I could start from scratch I'd definitely wallpaper this room but I don't want to start from scratch. Love my drapery fabric so we'll leave that too...

Here's the current rug, not showing areas where it is worn out. It is a very smooth sisal type that has held up remarkably well.  I have cats so rugs have to be cat proof so I'm replacing with something similar.

This is my fabric on the windows, floor to ceiling drapes. We have three windows in the room. I have white wood blinds that can go up and down behind them (we get a lot of sun in the afternoon).  This is a Thibaut fabric that I still love.

Here is chest in the room with two pictures. The top one is a cartoon a friend made many years ago of Sega and hubby hunting. The other is a Montpelier Races poster. The lamp is from Wildwood with a new shade from the shade store in Charlottesville. This is an expensive reproduction chest bought many years ago in North Carolina.

I think the bed needs replacing. It is old and I have never liked it much, four poster, very dated by today's standard.  Many of the beds I like are not cat proof (they can claw a linen headboard for example) so I am liking these two.... This one from Serena and Lilly. The white is nice but is it too beachy?

I also do not want a four-poster bed or one that that is too contemporary looking.  Wood is my preference only because of cats. They might claw the fabric part of a headboard. That would be an expensive replacement.  Another one I am looking at is from Williams-Sonoma Home.  It also comes in a whitewash but is it too beachy?  It comes also brown and black. I have some white painted furniture in the room so everything is not brown.

The room is quite large too, and rectangular shaped, my rug needs to be no smaller than 12 x 15.  So the room is around 17 feet long. It's hard to decorate a room that size with low ceilings IMHO.  I need to make is more cozy feeling somehow.  Ideas? Suggestions?

My World This Tuesday

Happy Tuesday. Hope you are enjoying this fabulous fall weather.  So what's going on in my world this morning?  Blogging early before work and barn chores, I am loving these new Tory Burch loafers.  My size is already sold out at Nordstrom's but you can find these also at the Tory Burch web site. Love these classic styles.  These will go with everything you own for years to come.

This is one of the few designers I don't have tucked away in my huge needlepoint stash.  Love Melissa Shirley Designs and you can pick a few of these up right now and save 20 percent at Absolutely Needlepoint in Cincinnati.   Call 513-561-7999 to order.

Want to test this new body cleanser from Drunk Elephant, one of my favorite brands. And it's very reasonably priced and perfect for the bath or shower.

I have been looking at the Tory Burch Spongeware plates for many months in green but recently discovered brown at Moda Operandi.  Love these and ordered these for November delivery.  What a great fall treat, to decorate a table with these from now until we bring out the Christmas china.  Add the pitchers for flowers to really set off your table all fall.  You can't find the brown at Tory Burch only at Moda Operandi.

Monday Musings

Did you watch the Preakness on Saturday?  If not you missed out on a great race.  It was the second fastest Preakness ever, only behind the great Secretariat. Swiss Skydiver took it to the boys and showed them how fast she can run. Can't wait to see if she'll take on the colts again at the Breeders' Cup next month.  (Blood Horse photo)  Fillies rule!

Trunk show alert at Needlepoint.com where Blue Ridge Stitchery canvases are 20 percent off.  Loving this one for the holidays.

This ornament is on my list:

Love this fox flag to add to my collection.  It would be great for fall.

This lovely Italian dish would be the perfect present for the holidays. Love this!  See it here.

Love this modern day bulb box. Fill it with paper whites for the perfect holiday gift he or she will remember.  See it here.

Alfie and I ventured out to our first horse show of 2020 and my first outing since early March.  It felt great to be out and about, see a lot of friends and while we did not do too much (Alfie is 19 not that fit) he was well-behaved and we managed to get a good ribbon unexpectedly in our only judged ride.  Aiming for a second outing in two weeks. Goals are good. (This is an old photo from a show in Raleigh).

It's Saturday

It's a chilly Saturday morning here in Virginia and my long "to do" list is ready to tackle once I finish this blog post. To get an idea of what a "day in the life" here looks like (and remember, this is after a very long week at work, so I was "living for the weekend" so to speak).  We will never run out of things to do, get bored, or have down time here.

1) Pick up mums and pumpkins (local vendor)

2) Ride Alfie

3) Barn chores

4) Replace fence boards

5) Pick up hay at 9:30

6) Take package to UPS and one to Fed Ex (shopping returns)

7) Pack trailer for horse show on Sunday

8) Plant bulbs after I clean out a new bed space, and mulch

9) Plan dinner

10) Watch Preakness around 5pm (post time is around 5:50)

So what's on my radar this Saturday?  Now you understand that blogging for me is a distraction from an incredibly overworked life (by choice I should add)......

There are two new shows on Netflix that I plan to add to my winter watching list starting with Rebecca. If you have not seen the original or have not read the book, then treat yourself. This was one of my favorite books growing up. Daphne Du Maurier's classic novel is a must read.  The new series starts later this month.

The 1940 original movie starred Joan Fontaine and Laurence Olivier and was an Alfred Hitchcock classic.  Read about this fabulous movie here. Definitely worth watching. It won an Oscar for Best Picture.

Movies rarely do good books justice so the book should be read as well.  Again, classics never go out of style, even books.

The other Netflix series I want to watch is Emily in Paris.  It sounds like Sex in the City in Paris.  I love Paris and it could be a cheap and easy way to escape to the City of Light without getting on a plane. We can all live through movies and television right now can't we?

Loving these Frye booties for fall to wear with jeans and everything you own.  See them here.

Love these bistro chairs at a great price to use indoors or outdoors in black.  See them here.

Start planning for your holiday decorating now with this super cute nutcracker.  At this great price buy two, one for each end of your mantel.

Let the day begin!

The Longest Winter

One of the best historical war books of all time is The Longest Day.  A great read (and a great movie too but books are always better).  It should be required reading in high school (but sadly noted that people do not read anymore especially in school).    But if you have not read this book it will make realize how spoiled we have all become.  These people sacrificed

While June 6, 1944 may have been "the longest day" I believe we need to prepare ourselves for the possibility of "the longest winter."  There is a lot of fake news out there.  A vaccine will not be available to the majority of us anytime soon.  Even if one is finally created that can be used do you want to be one of the first to try out the quickest vaccine ever created in the history of the world?  Nope, me neither.  And it has to be mass produced - millions and billions of doses.  Then it needs to be distributed to millions and billions of people. And who will pay for it?  Will it cost $500 a dose?  And how many times will you need to take it?  No one knows.  What happens if it makes you sick?  And who gets it first?  We are in this folks for at least another nine months and the reality is we won't just immediately return to our former pre-pandemic lives ever again.  So it is going to be a very long and very different winter.  And afterwards we will all learn to live in a different way.  This is likely not the first pandemic we will see in our lives either. Ask Bill Gates about that one.

There are going to be many lay-offs to come. It is starting to happen now and many (some expected and some unexpected) were announced yesterday.  People are going to struggle.  Our government is not going to be there to help those who really need help.  And there will be millions of Americans in this situation.

The best thing we can all do is to plan and if you are able, help. So how do you plan?

Realize first of all that life will be different this winter. We will be stuck inside and we won't be able to go out much.  Learn to live with the outdoors. Over time, I have learned to cherish winter much more than I once did. The air is fresh and crisp. The sun is bright.  Take long walks at lunchtime if you can.  Since the gym won't be an option, plan a daily walk or run at noon.  I have a treadmill so I run at night but I try to ride in winter at lunch or around 4 pm (planning my workday around a 4 pm ride).  Just put it on your calendar and do it.

Learning to dress warmly is half the battle with winter weather.  My Arcteryx clothes are the very warmest I own (the brand originated in Canada) and they last forever.  Some of mine are 20+ years old. This jacket is perfect for long winter walks. Layer it with a vest underneath for super warmth.  At the Arcteryx Outlet you can find some good deals (the brand is never discounted more than about 40 percent) and the clothing runs TTS.  This is my favorite and I have this one in black, a hoody version and the vest. I wear the vest almost every day in winter.

Wear warm leggings too.  Love these (I have not tried them) for the coming months.

Put together a reading list and a stitching stash. I have been building my stitching stash all year (and order thread online when I need it).  But create a reading list too.  I am reading this one right now.

Plan a mini-break.  We have trips planned to my family's beach house this fall and winter, which we typically don't do, just to get away.  Use Air BnB or go to a friend's place in lieu of staying in a hotel.  Having these on the calendar has given me something to look forward to.  This is our view at high tide.

Plan for the holidays. I am decorating for fall this year, then Christmas and then Valentine's Day. I ordered this door hanger in orange and will add my pumpkins and mums on Saturday.  Celebrate the seasons and the holidays even if just for your own family.

Decorate inside too.  Love this blue velvet pumpkin in Etsy (the shop is called Bymrsdaisy):

Plan ahead.  We just don't know what is in store for us. So don't wait until the last minute for anything.  We have had multiple household repairs lately. It took almost two months to get my oven fixed. Three weeks for the washing machine. Two repairs for the lawn mower. If you think your furnace needs servicing plan for it now.  My horses have an appointment with the dentist in late October, the vet for shots and Coggins in mid-October.

Stock up on supplies for winter.  Prepare for any possible supply chain issues.  Get lots for food for all of your animals as that keeps.  Order their meds so you have a few months' supply.

Plan fun things you can do indoors this winter.  I love to cook and plan to go outside my comfort zone this winter baking.  Hoping that Santa will deliver a new mixer but in case he does not I still plan to cook things I don't typically cook.

Here is a list of great new cookbooks for the fall from the New York Times.  This one is looking good to me:

And this one:

And if all else fails, there's always Netflix!  Stay safe. Watch the Preakness, the French Open this weekend.  Enjoy this fall weather and please wear a mask!

Needlepoint Christmas Ornaments - 2021

Since I only completed one new ornament for my garland this year, a goal for 2021 is to add at least five ornaments for next year.  I have ordered two ornaments and have one waiting for new thread to finish so adding two more will be really easy (so in reality thinking I'll add at least eight).  So here is what I am looking at..... And let me add that I like to do an ornament in between larger projects.  It makes me feel like I can easily finish something when a larger project make take a few months.

The rabbit fetish continues.....

Also love these bears also by Melissa Prince.

Love the Dubarry Boots from Pip and Roo:

And because we can't go to the real one, maybe an Hermes shopping bag ornament is the next best thing?

Love this one.  See it here.

Not sure why I have not stitched this one yet for my tree:

Love this one!  Apollo when he's all grown up.  See it here.

This one is waiting for thread so hoping to have this ready for 2021.  See it here.

Love sweaters for ornaments.  See this one here.

I ordered this one this week. See it here.

Love this one! See it here.

And this one from Blue Ridge Stitchery. See it here.

I have also added this one to my stash already.

And this is my lone new ornament for 2020.  Love it though!

Hope I have inspired you to stitch for your 2021 tree.  And happy October!
