RIP Arrogate

Shocking news this week that champion dirt runner, Arrogate, age 7, died in Lexington, KY.   If you have not seen his races online then please treat yourself.  Arrogate's win in the Dubai World Cup was the best horse race I've ever seen and his win at the Travers (his first graded stakes race) at three, the summer before (where he broke the track and stakes record) was no less impressive.  He retired as the richest North American race horse ever, with over $17M in his bank and returned to his home base, Juddmonte where he stood for the past three years.

I went out and hugged my guys late yesterday after hearing this terrible news.  It is unclear what caused his demise but he was having problems with his neck last week and he went steadily downhill from there, going down in his stall and never getting back up.  He was never able to recover and was put down several days later.  It sounds neurological, possibly shivers (just a hunch, which can present itself in the neck in rare cases).  In any event, it's a sad week in our world in many ways.

Those Arrogate babies that weren't put up for auction earlier in the year due to the pandemic, well, maybe something good can come out of this mess were are in, expecting many to keep them or to sell them now at a much higher premium. You just never know what life is going to bring.  Enjoy every single day.  RIP Arrogate.  You were a true champion.

  1. He won the Travers at Saratoga in August 2016 - his first stakes win and a Grade 1, no less - in his 5th start as a 3-year-old BEFORE he won the Dubai World Cup in March 2017, not after. His passing is an extraordinarily sad loss.
