Downtown Abbey Style

Television is not high on my list so I must admit that I'm not a regular Downtown Abbey watcher.  But I was amused by this article in the WSJ chanting that gardeners are now adopting the "Downtown Abbey" style.  This "style" has been used by us "country folk" for years.  Where have the gardeners been?

The "English Manor" look of Dubarry boots, Le Chameau wellies and Barbour jackets, well, let's just say I'm on my third Barbour.  And how many "horse people" do you know who don't own a pair of wellies?  I can't think of anyone.  And Kate Middleton has nothing to do with it.

Even Blair Waldorf and Gossip Girl got into the equestrian act.

Most of us who spend time in the mud, the cold, the wind, and snow, no matter what, have learned to dress in it. And let's admit that we'd rather wear a nice waxed jacket than a $50 pair of Carthart overalls.  But the overalls are used when absolutely necessary.

And I will admit that I do own a pair of Pucci wellies, yes, the Italian ones in bright colors that make you look like Twiggy or some other 60's era chameleon.   But being in the country does not mean that you can't love style.

But that "Downtown Abbey" country look has been around for years and years.  We used it before even Ralph.  Go to the races, a horse show in the spring or fall or just to a farm and you'll find that some of us have been fashionable all along  Who knew?
