Maximum Security is the true rags to riches horse story that is just too unbelievable to be true. But it is true. He's the horse that no one wanted. Mom and dad both were almost given away. His sire, New's Year Day was sold to Brazil and will stand in Japan this year. His dam, Justwhistledixie, is retired at age 14. This horse could have been claimed for $16,000 as a two-year-old and this past Saturday he just won the world's richest horse race, a staggering $10 million to the winner! He is clearly the best dirt race horse on the planet right now. And he gutted out this win, overcoming a swerving Mucho Gusto in the stretch. He was bulging so badly that jockey Luis Saez had to almost pull Max back duck him behind Mucho Gusto, so he go on his left side and he still won! That just simply never happens.
This is sweet revenge for the stewards at the Derby last May. Could he have won the Triple Crown? We'll never know but this is a horse that has so much class and does not want to be beaten. The good news is that he's coming back to the US and not staying around for the Dubai World Cup at the end of the month. He's pointed to the Breeder's Cup Classic in November at Keeneland and he'll likely race a few more times between now and then. Maybe the Met Mile? Let's hope he stays healthy. What a horse! And I really can't wait for the movie!
